Do you ever get over an affair? Unfortunately if you’re asking this question it means that your relationship has been rocked by adultery. Cheating can make or break a couple’s commitment to one another and how it impacts you and your partner will define your relationship. If you love one another you can get past the infidelity and go on to have a deeply connected, fulfilling future. Obviously it’s not as easy as deciding that you’ll forgive and forget. There are important steps you two must take together if you want to regain the trust and love that has been damaged.
One area that causes much heartbreak and anxiety for both partners is discussing the details of the affair. It’s important for both of you to be honest but when it comes to sharing fine points of what happened with the other person that can lead to pain and resentment. It’s important that you two set boundaries together about what is on and off limits to talk about. If you were cheated on you may believe that you want and need to know every small piece of information there is to know, but bear in mind that can be overwhelming and difficult to push to the back of your mind and imagination once it’s been shared. Decide what you’re both comfortable sharing and hearing and then proceed slowly. You certainly don’t have to talk about it endlessly day in and day out. That will only result in both of you feeling emotionally exhausted and farther apart than ever. Make time to talk about what happened, but also make time for the typical family things you are accustomed to doing.
Trust is the cornerstone of any successful marriage and after adultery that trust has to be rebuilt slowly. The person who is guilty of the infidelity has their work cut out for them. They must be prepared to live their life like an open book, for the foreseeable future. That typically means being available at any moment via telephone and taking their partner along more often when it’s suitable. The person who was cheated on also has a role to fill when it comes to restoring trust. They have to learn how to do that so they don’t become something of a babysitter to their partner. Once a person has worked hard to re-earn the trust of their partner, they should be treated as such and the expectations for constant contact can be relaxed a bit. Both people need to learn how to trust each other again and they need to feel respected while doing so.
